Fall and winter season vaccines

Ragweed, Mountain Cedar and Oak get all the attention in San Antonio, but we should not ignore these respiratory viruses. Here is a neat summery of vaccine recommendations for COVID-19, RSV, and Influenza, now that we are going into the fall season.

COVID-19 Vaccine:

  • Why: Protects against COVID-19, that despite being less virulent than in years past, is still provoking respiratory flares.
  • When: Get the most up-to-date vaccine as soon as it becomes available.

RSV Vaccine:

  • Why: Protects against RSV, a common respiratory virus that can cause severe illness in infants and older adults, that peaks usually in the winter.
  • When: Recommended for infants and older adults at high risk, any time of the year.
  • Who: Infants and older adults at high risk for RSV infection.

Flu Vaccine:

  • Why: Protects against influenza, a contagious respiratory illness that can cause serious complications during the Fall and Winter seasons mostly.
  • When: The best time to get vaccinated is during the fall (September and October).
  • Who: Everyone 6 months of age and older.

These are general recommendations. It’s essential to consult with your healthcare provider to determine the specific vaccines you need based on your age, health history, and risk factors.
